[Sep 25] Early Representations of Buddha Shakyamuni and His Veneration at Mathura and Sanchi, India

2021-09-04

* Lecture Reschedule Announcement

The online lecture “Early Representations of Buddha Shakyamuni and His Veneration at Mathura and Sanchi, India” by Dr. Corinna Wessels-Mevissen on August 21, 2021 will be rescheduled to September 25. Thank you for your kind attention!

This talk introduces two major visual concepts, coexisting within the chosen time slot of the first and second centuries CE, on the soil of the modern Indian state. This phase saw the earliest statues and relief panels of the Buddha, and Bodhisattvas, created by stone sculptors of the art centre of Mathura. Quite a different, earlier tradition was continued further to the south, largely consisting of narrative reliefs. Stupa no. 1 at Sanchi will be serving as an example for demonstrating its characteristics. Special attention will be given to lifelike scenes of devotion focusing on an ‘invisible presence’ of Buddha Shakyamuni.
