This talk introduces two major visual concepts, coexisting within the chosen time slot of the first and second centuries CE, on the soil of the modern Indian state. This phase saw the earliest statues and relief panels of the Buddha, and Bodhisattvas, created by stone sculptors of the art centre of Mathura. Quite a different, earlier tradition was continued further to the south, largely consisting of narrative reliefs. Stupa no. 1 at Sanchi will be serving as an example for demonstrating its characteristics. Special attention will be given to lifelike scenes of devotion focusing on an ‘invisible presence’ of Buddha Shakyamuni.

About the Lecturer：

Dr. Corinna Wessels-Mevissen

Dr. Corinna Wessels-Mevissen obtained her doctorate in Indian Art History in 1999. She worked for the Asian Art Museum, Berlin, on several occasions, including organising a special exhibition on the Mathura school of sculpture. She has also conducted research, taught university courses in Berlin, and recently, delivered a series of online lectures for the Centre for Gandhian and Indian Studies, Fudan University, Shanghai.
