[Sep 11]Spiritual Remedy: The Religious Culture of the Medicine Buddha and the Sutra Illustration

2021-08-28

Medicine Buddha beliefs have gradually become an important part of Chinese Buddhist beliefs since the Southern and Northern dynasties. The Medicine Buddha is a great doctor in disaster relief and prolonging people’s lives. He does not only cure the physical diseases of sentient beings, but also heals the suffering of people’s hearts. When there is turmoil, wars, diseases, and people’s hearts suffer, the belief in the Medicine Buddha becomes the spiritual cure to relieve suffering and bring happiness. Since the belief of the Medicine Buddha has the benefit to bring happiness to all sentient beings, the statues of the Medicine Buddha and his Sutra illustrations became more popular during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The lecture will introduce the origins of the Medicine Buddha beliefs in Dunhuang and its Sutra illustrations in Sui and Tang, and the spread and development of the Medicine Buddha classics from India to China.
