[Jul 10] The Thus-come and Thus-gone of the Tian Tan Big Buddha

2021-07-06

The Buddha's appearance in the world has an important purpose, that is, to demonstrate and explain the method of liberating oneself from suffering and finding happiness for all sentient beings. In order to fulfil his vow of universal liberation, the Buddha experienced numerous rebirths through countless eons and finally realized the universal truth under the Bodhi tree, achieving complete liberation and enlightenment.

The speaker examines the origin of the Tian Tan Big Buddha on the Peak of Muk Yue on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, and explores the meaning of Buddhist statues. The iconic statue is connected also to the aspirations of the past masters of the Po Lin Monastery. This majestic statue brings positivity to all, sowing positive impressions to the viewers. It echoes what was said in the Lotus Sutra: “A single recitation of namo buddhāya establishes one in the Path of the Buddha."
